Why we created this website

The idea for My Type 2 Diabetes comes from a very personal place. My father was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in his early 50s. I was just 11 when he suffered his first stroke, leaving him with significant disabilities and unable to speak. Watching his struggles — and later losing him to diabetes complications at 64 — left a deep and lasting impression on me.

In the years that followed, several of my siblings were also diagnosed, and 15 years ago my husband developed Type 2 diabetes. Then, more recently, our eldest son — at the age of 37, fit and active — was found to have pre-diabetes. As a nurse, I’ve spent much of my professional life supporting people with diabetes, but seeing the impact of this disease within my own family has given me a completely new perspective. With the arrival of our grandson, and strong family histories on both sides, we felt compelled to create something that helps others live well with diabetes.
